How to Make Acetylene Gas

Acetylene is one of the popular gases used in oxy-acetylene welding and cutting. It comprises of two carbon atoms and two hydrogen atoms which is chemically represented as C2H2. There are two processes to make this compound—chemical reaction and thermal cracking using diverse type of materials. We are focused only on the chemical process for which calcium carbide is the raw material for production of acetylene for commercial purposes.

Calcium carbide is made by a mixture of lime and coke in a blast furnace. And, the product so formed is calcium carbide. Acetylene gas is generated by reaction of calcium carbide with water as the reaction a great deal heat which is moderated by water to avoid fires and explosions. The chemical reaction of the process is CaC2 + 2H2O → C2H2 + Ca (OH) 2. The reaction generates acetylene gas, calcium hydroxide and heat. Acetylene is separated by dissolving the product in solvent called acetone.
